BRISBANE REGION

Sandgate Beach, Sandgate, Qld 4017 (Top recommended beach - safest, shallow, all sand bottom, showers, toilets, cafes, reachable by public transport)

Best wind directions: SE/E/NE/N

Conditions: Flat shallow water

Wind average: 13-18kts

Season: Sept to April

Suitability: Beginners to Advanced

Pros: Shallow, sand bottom, no current, safe, shop and rescue services on location, showers, toilets, free BBQs, cafes and restaurants, public transport: 30 minutes direct train ride from Brisbane City. It will also work on southerly winds at low tide. This is known as the safest and most popular kite beach in Brisbane with kite shop on location. 

Cons: Limited launching area at high tide. Gusty in southerly directions. Not suitable for offshore directions (westerlies). Stingrays are around the area. Shuffle your feet while walking in water. They will shoot off before you get close enough. Jellyfish: once or twice a year the blue blubber jellyfish comes in when it is blowing NE winds. Very occasionally we have blue bottles come in the area. Blue blubbers are generally mild, they cause minor skin irritation rather than anything dangerous. Do not scratch, go out of water and rinse with seawater. Immerse the stung area in hot water if available, just like with stingray stings treatment, as hot as you can comfortably tolerate. Cold packs if hot water not available. Local chemists also sell gels to help relieve pain and itching. We are also very heavily governed by the Marine Parks as there are a number of protected species of shorebirds in the area. Make sure you stay well clear of the shoreline.

 

Brighton Beach, Brighton, Qld 4017

Conditions: Flat shallow water

Suitability: Beginners to Advanced

Pros: Shallow, sand bottom, no current.

Cons: Limited launching area at high tide. No facilities, no toilets. Sharp rocks reef north of beach. Gusty in northerly directions. Not suitable for offshore directions (westerlies). Suitability: Intermediate to Advanced

Pros: Works on westerly.

Cons: Rocks, reefs, deep water.

Conditions: Bump & Jump deep water

Wind average: 13-18kts

Suitability: Intermediate to Advanced

Pros: Works on westerly.

Cons: Oyster beds, rocks.

Cons: Gusty, rocks, mud, cannot rig up above high tide mark (council's ban).

Pros: Flat water, protected area. most of the time you will find locals there. 

Cons: Current, tides, deep water, water traffic (sea planes, boats, jet skis. Will only work when wind and tide is at opposite directions. If no one is out, it will probably mean conditions is NOT suitable for the spot. Not suitable for offshore directions (westerlies).
